Location of Tauch Terminal relative to Tulamben Wreck Divers

Postby kieranu on Wed Mar 10, 2010 2:47 pm

For those of you who have been to Tulamben before, how close is Tauch Terminal to Tulamben Wreck Divers?

The group I'm going with is in the situation that Tulamben Wreck Divers is not available for one of the nights we are looking to go, but the diving with Tauch Terminal is expensive so debating whether to stay at Wreck Divers for the first few nights then move or spend the whole time at Tauch and just dive with Wreck Divers. Do Wreck Divers charge more to dive if you're not staying with them?

Thanks,
Kieran

Never been or stayed there myself but looking at there site photos there about 200mts south from the wreck which makes them 200mts from TWDs.
Looks like its run by a german and transactions are in euro. Something to bear in mind.
I dont believe Tony charges any more if you arnt staying with him, prices are on his site but they are around $30 us a dive although im sure if you are going to do a bit of diving with a large group that can be negotiated.
I saw his bookings for this year and he is pretty full most months especially our winter months, we have managed to get a couple of weeks in August but my advice to anyone is book as early as possible 6-12 months in advance particulary if there is a big group of you's going.
I would let him know if you are just going to dive through him so extra staff and guides can be arranged, if you have had trouble getting accomidation through him it means theres going to be a lot of divers there when your there. If you want to contact him its best to ring him as there email system and net sucks. It took him nearly 2 hours to get on the net while we were there.

Thanks,

I tried to catch up with Tony a couple weeks ago when he was in town and he reckoned he would be able to accommodate us, but after calling me once and saying he'd call me again that avo he disappeared. Everyone seems pretty busy that weekend but not so much the week before so must be something going on - public holiday over East or something? We can get in every day bar one but the guy who I'm organizing this for doesn't really want to switch places part way which is fair enough. While the rooms at Tauch Terminal are relatively expensive they're not too bad and at least they have some - the diving they subsequently quoted me was slightly under USD30 so a bit less than Tulamben Wreck Divers but no unlimited diving deal so may just go with them so that all our crap is one place. Anyway, we can decide that nearer the time.

Anyway, the final decision of what we end up doing rests with this guy so hopefully he makes his mind up soon.

cheers

Nothing wrong with Germans - they just have a funny accent :P :P :P

When I booked my trip for August he was pretty much full for most of that month and onwards.

I think the most cost effective way to dive with TWD is on a package. Tauch Terminal is right on the beach whereas TWD is back from the beach but I just love all the staff and the service at TWD so would always choose them.

I'm a TWD fan and have styed there 4 or 5 times. We stayed at Tauch a few years back, it's a long story but ended up in Joondalup Emergency ward the day after returning, very, very ill. This was before the recent(ish) renovations by the new owners I must say. We had a meal there on last trip, food and service was excellent and paid in Rp.(not euro). The renovated room and grounds look really nice and they have a new kitchen

Having said I'm a TWD fan, the guides are excellent, the diving is great but we have grown a little weary of the TWD room shuffle (even though we now know which room number to insist on and to arrive with the booking e-mail in hand) and some reluctance to arrange dives outside the immediate area.

Next trip we are staying at http://libertydiveresort.com/ which is a bit west of the wreck on the shore. The rooms and grounds are great, it's still only a short stroll to Wayans restaurant and I believe they dive the drop off with a short car trip (it's just too far to walk on the rocks). It is owned and run by locals (Wayan of course) and I have it on good authority that you won't be dissapointed. Who knows, we may end up back at TWD the time after, but we are giving Liberty Dive Resort a crack to see what it's like.

I guess it must depend on how busy they are, when I was there we were able to do plenty of dives out of town. Some trips it's hard to get the room organised how you want it, other times it's hard to get the diving organised how you want it, but once you know to go there expecting a little bit of confusion then it's all ok.

Is this the same Wayan that is Tony's business partner?

Everyone's called Wayan, well the first born male anyway. Best to get their second or surname to be sure.

The Balinese naming system goes like this:

The firstborn is "Wayan", second is "Made," third is "Nyoman" or Komang, and fourth is "Ketut" and if there is a fifth child, he/she is often called Wayan Balik (or Wayan "again").

I've lost count of the numer of Wayans and Mades I've had as dive guides over the years. :)

Emma and I have had Wayan as our guide on all our trips to Tulamben. Without doubt one of the best blokes you will meet and a mighty fine diver and guide !!
Far left.

So is the Wayan in the photo now running his own operation at Liberty Dive Resort?

It sounds like the Wayan's are Bali's equivalent of the Red Sea's Mohammed's then.

Looks like we may end up spending one night at the Liberty Resort also. Looks very small, but hopefully good.
